Getting the Nexus One working on Fido (Canada)

Since the Nexus One is an unlocked phone and you can buy it without having to sign your life away, you will have to do a little bit of configuration yourself. It took me a little while to sort out what little conflicting information I could find in order to get all the bits in place.

As far as I can tell, the phone works perfectly on the Fido network at 3G speeds (I saw a lot of people saying it would not and would only work on EDGE).

Here are the steps you need to take to get the phone working on Fido's network.

Basic Phone & Voice Setup
  1. The Phone will want to configure when you first turn it on (You need a gmail account or a Google Apps account for this). Leave the SIM card out until the initial configuration is done. You can do it with the SIM in, but it's better to use a WiFi access point instead.
  2. Once done and booted for the first time, shut the phone down again (press and hold the button on the top left). Once the phone is off, insert your SIM (give attention to the orientation of the SIM card, it's labeled in the slot). Press the same button to power up the phone again.
  3. You should now have a working cell phone. you can make and receive calls with it etc. however the data portion will not yet be working. Make a test call if you can to check that the SIM is correctly installed.
Get the Data Setup
At this point the phone is working but you have no data. It will work fine on a Wifi connection (which you have already created) but as soon as you leave the house and the wifi goes out of range, you will lose the data access. All is not lost, there are just a couple of settings to add.

  1. On the phone, go to: Settings -> Wireless & Networks -> Mobile Networks
  2. Click on "Access Point Names" (it will be an empty screen).
  3. Click the menu button (centre left) and select "New APN".
You need to do that twice as there are two APNs to add as follows:

This is the one that will show the 3G icon in the notification bar.
Name: FidoINT
APN: internet.fido.ca
Username: fido
Password: fido
APN Type: default
leave the rest of the fields blank

This one will enable MMS from the phone.
Name: FidoMMS
APN: mms.fido.ca
MMSC: http://mms.fido.ca
MMS Proxy: 205.151.011.013
APN Type: mms
leave the rest of the fields blank

You should now have proper 3G data access and MMS working.

Update 1: It appears that MMS is not working. I'll see if I can sort out why and post it here.

Update 2: A commentator below (Milo) added the following to our knowledge base:
"To all those of you who are not getting 3g speeds and only edge:

I called Nexus One support about the issue, and I figured out why it is that I too am only getting edge. There are 2 versions of the Nexus One. The AT&T version and the world version. The most recent one which became available for sale in Canada will allow for 3g on all networks around the world, however if you purchased your nexus one from the states or a third party site prior to its release in Canada then you're as boned as I am. The newer Nexus One is identical except for the fact it works in wider cellular range for data. Now this doesn't mean the phone is completely useless for 3g. For example I just got back from Europe using an Orange sim and had 3g. Sadly I don't believe any provider in Canada at the moment works on the same frequency as the older Nexus One."

thanks a lot. I was stuck a EDGE.

PS. I didn't see the green button for MMS. Works for G3.

Hmm... I'm not sure I saw a green button myself (its being evaluated by someone else this week, so can't check) but I do know sending a photo or vcard worked, which means that MMS is working.

Try actually sending a photo to someone with a working MMS account to check if it's doing what it's supposed to.

Hi I followed your instruction but still only has Edge. (the notification on top of screen shows E, not 3G). What can i do?

@Huang

I have no idea why its not working for you. We do have at least two examples on this site of it working so if we are to try and resolve your issue, there are two things for you to check first:

1) Are you *sure* you entered the correct info and didn't mess up some other setting (like turn on the 2g only option).

2) Are you *sure* your area is covered by 3g?

Check those two (or three) things. We know now that the Nexus One works on fido, so it's likely an issue in your specific case..

Hey, thanks very much.

Got it all working now.

Apparently MMS isn't working for me... did you use the settings in my post or can you share what you did do?

I called Fido about it, but the support guy that answered the phone had no clue what I was talking about (actually less cluse than most)... I've been meaning to dig deeper and follow up with a real tech, but haven't have time yet.

Well, I used everything that you outlined above... It's possible that I don't even know what it's like to have MMS working.

I know that the "green button" for MMS isn't showing, but I was able to send a large pic to my wife's iPhone. I thought that my Nexus One told me I was using MMS at the time.

I could be wrong. I'll have to do some more research.

i just tried this out on my nexus one and i get the E (edge network) in my notification bar as well. fido told me that i should be getting 3G speeds... i know i entered everything properly, i did it 3 times... i'm paying for 3G and not even getting it.. lame. hopefully i figure it out.!!

@Mario

I assure you it does work, all except the MMS, which I have not verified and have reports that it doesn't work.

You should absolutely be getting 3G (mine is showing 3g as I speak).

If your sure the settings you have used are correct, the next thing to suspect is that for some reason your not getting a good enough signal from the tower.

Try checking now and then as you move around the city (not sure where you are of course) to see if you get them in some places and not others.

Also, I'm sure I don't have to mention this, but ensure that you don't have a setting like "Use Only 2G networks" enabled. You can also try running the "Select Operator" scan and choose Fido although I don't think that will make any difference.

Good luck!

@braindef

sending a large pic over SMS/MMS means it is working! I'm delighted to hear it :)

Could the problem with this working fot some and not for others be the model type? Like the sprint version or at&t....

To all those of you who are not getting 3g speeds and only edge:

@Milo

Thanks for that. I'm going to post it on the main page if you don't mind, so that others will be sure to see it.

Jon Moore said...

In fact, @Milo is incorrect. There are indeed two versions of the phone, but the original one is the T-Mobile one, and the second being the AT&T one.

In Canada, if you buy the T-Mobile one, you can activate on both networks, but only get Edge data on Rogers and Fido.
The AT&T one operates on the same 3G bands as Fido and Rogers, and if rooted, will give you full access to 3G speeds.

You can tell, when buying this unit online used, to get the seller to tell you what the FCC ID# is under the battery.

If it ends in "100" then it is the T-Mobile one
Ending in "110" is the AT&T one.

Hope this clarifies things

The only thing I'd add to sh0nuff's comment is that I *did not* have to root the phone to get it to work with Fido or Rogers... But then I bought mine directly from google, so maybe that part was not locked down.

In case it helps, my FCC I'd ends in 110.

@Brill Pappin

I'm about to order a Nexus One from Google directly (as a registered android dev). Is that what you did? I want to know so that I can be sure that mine is a 110

Brill Pappin said...

@Xa

I can't tell you that for sure. I bought mine when Google was selling them directly to the public and simply ordered the one that matched my locale.

Based on the hardware description, I think it is the same phone because of this band(s):
GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)

You should be able to check the bands for your local carrier with a google search to see if they match up.
Not all bands will, and different carriers use different sets of bands but I think Fido and Rogers use: 850, 1900, 2100.

See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GSM_frequency_ranges#The_Americas

I use Fido and I believe that it's primary bands are 1900 for urban and 850 for rural.
However, I strongly recommend that you do your own research and double check the carrier you want to use.
